I need me an education!
“Ding dong” went the door bell this evening. I was greeted, if that’s what it was intended as, with some teenager (I think) getting all defensive saying, “Hey now, I’m not here startin’ any trouble!” I’m taken aback but she starts her spiel about trying to get an education, Ohio State, donations, how people are helping out their fellow people with it, she’s been walking around all day in this heat, etc… You know the thing where they’re trying to get me to buy magazine subscriptions. Yeah. I wish they wouldn’t knock on the door too. But alas, now somehow I need to get this lady to mosey on her little way. Frankly I’m not comfortable writing anybody a check right there on the spot at my doorway to someone I don’t even know, especially someone asking for a donation to something I can’t verify. Pardon my cynicism.
Now I think she was starting to get the hint that I wasn’t going to go along with the deal so she goes on about how I obviously didn’t believe in helping others get an education, how I am thinking only towards what I needed, and somehow throw God at me for good measure. Pardon me? I would love to help out my fellow [wo]man but you know what? I’m still in college myself. I am four little children. I’m sorry for being selfish but if I was to place any monies towards an education, my children are more at the top of the list than this chick. Secondly, there is really no reason for someone to walk the neighborhoods and sell magazine subscriptions if the goal is to pay for college. That’s why we have financial aid in the forms of grants, loans, scholarships, etc… Heck, I’m going back to school totally on Pell Grants (I make just not enough, I guess). And if you really want to get into Ohio State, work your ass off for it. Get a scholarship. Don’t make an assumption that since you’re poor that you cannot possibly go to school. There are ways. If you have to borrow money, that’s okay. That’s life.
Now can’t I give just a little? Frankly, every penny I make needs to be used every month or saved just in case. With four children, there’s always a possibility of just in case. I do donate when I can but not to just anybody. I would prefer to do so to an organization or through my employer’s employee spirit organization.
Plus it wouldn’t have hurt for this lady to wear more appropriate clothing. I am not too impressed by your short shorts and tube top. I wish I could help everyone but I’m fairly limited in my charity. Honestly, whomever put her up to this is quite possibly scamming her good. Whatever happened to kids just being kids during the summer? Even finding a decent internship or summer school would be good too. Excuse me, but now I need to plot against the 10 year olds who want to sell me candy.

Maybe she was hoping you’d be mesmerized by her legs and boobs so you’d write out a check. Yeah, there’s never a second chance to make a first impression and a lot of kids just don’t understand that and wonder why they don’t get anywhere.
I’m still paying off my college education that has yet to reap any benefits. I suggest she find a job and place her earnings in a savings account. Like you said, there’s an abundance of financial aid out there. I’m sure Ohio State has a financial aid office that will be glad to help her out.
I’m all for helping people out when I can but I need assurances that my donation will be actually going toward the specified cause, not just somebody’s party fund. Charity begins at home and I’d rather my grandchildren had a shot at a college education than a bimbo in a tube top.
